Dow Jones has been a global leader in news and business analysis for over 130 years, with brands such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s Group, Dow Jones Newswires, Factiva and Dow Jones Risk & Compliance.
Through its trusted news and high-quality data, Dow Jones helps customers and partners make better decisions — for the good of business, and the world.
But to make its data easier to find, access, and integrate, Dow Jones recognized the need to transform the way it worked with third-party developers.
Enter Niranjan Thomas, General Manager, Developer Platform & Solution Engineering at Dow Jones.
Niranjan knew the best way to build a thriving developer ecosystem was to collaborate with a partner who would provide not only an end-to-end solution but also the expertise to create a world-class developer experience.
Problem
What Dow Jones Needed
As an integral player in business decision making across the globe, Dow Jones saw a need to build long-lasting relationships with developers and make their lives easier. Its existing developer products were only the beginning.
Dow Jones needed to create a central place where customer and partner developers could access its data, to develop tools and digital solutions for their own downstream customers. Furthermore, it was of critical importance that its developer portal provided a best-in-class experience.
That’s when Niranjan reached out to Constellant. He wanted his team to partner with a deep domain expert to implement a new approach that would help him build a thriving developer ecosystem.

Solution
How EMaaS Helped
Niranjan’s team at Dow Jones was initially drawn to Constellant’s Ecosystem Management-as-a-Service solution because of its end-to-end product, dpEngine, and its deep domain expertise. Because of these complementary offerings, Dow Jones was able to launch a developer ecosystem with a world-class developer experience.

Dow Jones launched its developer program in 2017 with a series of developer offerings (it now has over 90 different APIs and feed products) in a new platform run by dpEngine.
Three years later, Dow Jones is still using dpEngine and drawing on Constellant’s expertise. Dow Jones’s APIs and feeds continue to contribute to the company’s strong growth, which Niranjan attributes to providing a world-class developer experience. As recently as December of 2019, the company made significant improvements to its developer experience by combining a number of disparate developer offerings into a central digital ecosystem.
Results
The continued evolution of Dow Jones’s developer ecosystem
Dow Jones continues to build out its developer ecosystem with the introduction of new features including a developer sandbox and developer blueprints. Niranjan’s team is confident its developer offering is going to continue to drive growth for Dow Jones, while allowing its customers and partners to use Dow Jones’s data in smarter, more valuable ways.
With the support of Constellant, Dow Jones has created a superior experience for third-party developers. With Constellant as a partner, Dow Jones has been able to think differently about its customers’ own digital transformation and how to best differentiate Dow Jones as a news and data company that understands how to best help and engage with the developer community.
